Resumo: Objectives: To assess dysgeusia patterns among oral and oropharyngeal squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) patients subjected to different oncological treatment modalities. Study Design: OSCC patients who underwent radiotherapy (RT) or chemoradiotherapy (CRT). Patients were paired in 8 groups divided by primary (surgery or induction chemotherapy) followed by adjuvant treatment or definitive CRT or exclusive RT protocols. Dysgeusia, xerostomia, oral mucositis (OM) and tube feeding information were retrieved from electronic medical charts. Statistical analysis was performed regarding the correlation of treatment modalities with dysgeusia, and of xerostomia and OM with dysgeusia. Results: 150 patients were included. CRT groups presented early severe dysgeusia. Tongue surgery followed by CRT presented severe grade 2 dysgeusia on the first week when compared to RT (p=0.04). Xerostomia and dysgeusia and OM and dysgeusia presented a positive correlation (P<0.001). Malnutrition associated with appetite loss and dysgeusia was the indication for tube feeding in 26.8% of patients. Conclusions: CRT protocols may be predictors of severe dysgeusia early onset. Positive correlation of xerostomia/OM with dysgeusia may lead to a decrease in appetite and weight loss and consequently higher need for tube feeding reinforcing the importance of working on strategies for dysgeusia management.
