Resumo: Cirrhosis-associated immune dysfunction can precipitate reactivation and replication of latent virus. Objective: to identify the presence of human herpesvirus (HHV) in blood plasma and saliva samples from patients with liver cirrhosis (LC) and correlate it with clinical data and laboratory tests. Study Design: this is an observational cross-sectional study. Clinical data, blood and saliva of 72 patients with LC were collected. Results: The sample consisted predominantly of males (n=51, 70%), with a mean age of 54 years. The median value of MELD was 15 and 59% were classified as having decompensated cirrhosis. 47.2% (n=34) had leukopenia. HHV were not identified in blood plasma samples. In saliva, the main HHV identified were HHV-7 (n=46, 63%) and EBV (n=30, 41%). The correlation between EBV and alterations in total leukocytes and lymphocytes was statistically significant (p=0.038 and p=0.047, respectively). There was no correlation between viral presence and other independent variables. Conclusion: The identification of EBV in saliva is linked to the state of circulating immunity of the cirrhotic patient. It is possible that the immune deficiency presented by patients with LC may have a role in the shedding of EBV in saliva.
