Resumo: Objective: The aim was to carry out an epidemiological survey of potentially malignant lesions (PML) in the oral and maxillofacial pathology service in a period of 15 years.
Study design: The clinical and histopathological characteristics of the were evaluated and the clinicopathological follow-up was performed.
Results: A total of 740 biopsies from patients with a clinical and histopathological diagnosis of leukoplakia, erythroplakia and leukoerythroplakia were performed from 2007 to 2022, representing 6.1% of diagnoses. Leukoplakia was the most common lesion (88.6%), in both sexes, with a mean age of 55.7±14.0 years. Most were smokers (46.4%), had single lesions (65%), less than or equal to 2cm (72%) and in regions with low risk of malignant transformation (66.2%). The main histopathological diagnosis was mild epithelial dysplasia (37.7%) and 2.8% of the sample was diagnosed with carcinoma in situ. Malignant transformation was observed in 1.1% of the sample, mostly women, with a mean age of 64±15.3 years, with a clinical diagnosis of leukoplakia, located mainly on the lateral border of the tongue of smokers. Low adherence to follow-up appointments was observed.
Conclusion: leukoplakia is the most common PML, especially in smokers and most lesions have a low risk of malignant transformation.
